John Hegedus Sr. founded the
liquor store after working as a publisher for many years. He purchased a small
space inside of a local mini-mall on Hamilton Street in Somerset, NJ and
won a bid for a liquor license and so Scarlet Knight Liquors was created.
As business began to
pick up, John was having issues maintaining inventory due to the lack of
space. He approached the owner of the lot and asked to purchase a bigger space.
He decided to look for a space around the area where he could build an
adequate sized building because the pricing for a bigger space was out of the
price range. He found the plot of land he needed at 874 Hamilton Street,
Somerset, NJ, right down the street from his previous location. John split
ownership of the liquor store with his wife and years later included his son
and daughter in the partnership in exchange for them running the day-to-day
activities. His daughter married Mark VanBurik and upon becoming pregnant with
their first child; she resigned her daily responsibilities to her husband who
was at the time was out of work.
